The first public charter school to open its doors to students still pioneers change
Healthy Start Academy is part of the original school choice movement. In the 1990s, Durham leaders became passionate about access to great schools. In 1997, Healthy Start Academy opened its doors, welcoming at-risk, inner-city students to the first public charter school in North Carolina.
Today, the pioneering spirit continues. Recently, Healthy Start Academy was one of the first schools to commit to 100% healthy nutrition, and it provides breakfast and lunch to all students.
In 1888, the Blackwell Baptist Church was constructed. It was renamed Second Baptist Church in 1890 and became Temple Baptist Church in the early 1900s. This is our home.
THE FIRST CHARTER SCHOOL
In 1997, Healthy Start Academy became the state’s first public charter school, serving inner-city Durham students who were at-risk for academic failure.
